After the death of her husband, Glynna Greer is at a loss as to how to support her two kids, Paul and Janny, and herself. Glynna decides to open a restaurant to feed the people of Broken Wheel, despite the fact that she can’t cook. Cooking is her means of support, Dare Riker is her passion. Dare, and his friends saved her and her kids from an abusive husband when he was killed in a shootout. Flint Greer had stole the land of several people in Broken Wheel, including that of Dare’s friend, Luke. Now the towns people were free from Flint’s heavy-handed tactics and Glynna was free to love another. The only problem is Glynna only wants one man and that is the one man her son, Paul, hates with a passion. Can they get Paul passed his hatred? Will they be free to love each other as only they can?

Dare Riker is a Regulator by choice, a Doctor by accident and Glynna Greer’s self-proclaimed protector. After coming to Texas to help his friend, Luke stone, when he found his father murdered and his ranch stolen by none other than Glynna Greer’s newly deceased husband, Flint, he finds himself in two battles. To find out who is trying to kill him and to win Glynna’s heart. He soon finds that neither battle is easily won but he is determined to succeed in both. Everytime he turns around there is an attack on his life, but worse than that is the way every time he is around Glynna he gets all Fired Up. Can he save himself with the help of his friends? But, more importantly, can he wins Glynna’s trust and, therefore, her heart?

I have read several books by Mary Connealy and, once again, she didn’t disappoint me with Fired Up. Her characters are always so charming and on point with the storyline. I love the way her heros are always that, a hero. Dare Riker is a fighter for justice as well as a fighter for love. He believes in doing what’s right even if it means sacrificing himself in the process. I have read about the “Regulators” in other books and their story always intrigues me. Men that will give up their lives to bring criminals to justice. I’m glad that is the background of Dare, Luke, Vince and Jonas in these stories. It just seems to “fit”.

Glynna is a fighter too but in a different way. She fights for her life. She fights for the safety of her kids and herself. She fights for survival. And she fights for what she wants. She is a strong woman that doesn’t show weakness during a crisis. Instead, she takes charge and helps those in charge when needed. She can also be fiesty when called for and I love a fiesty heroine.

All in all, Fired Up is a story I would read again and again, not just a fly by night read. Mary Connealy is a wonderful writer and, if you haven’t read one of her books, you should. They are definite page turners. Fired Up is sure to keep you enthralled. A HIGHLY recommended read!

Blurb:

When a doctor who attracts danger falls for a cook determined to make it on her own, there’s going to be trouble in Texas!

Glynna Greer came west as a mail-order bride and ended up in a bad situation. Now her husband, Flint, is dead, and she’s determined to make a go of it on her own. In a town full of men, Glynna decides she can support her two children by opening a diner–never mind that cooking is not her greatest talent.

Dare Riker is a doctor who saves lives, but someone seems determined to end his. It may have something to do with the traitors he dealt with during the Civil War, or it might be related to the recent incident with Flint Greer and the ranch. Whoever the culprit is, he or she seems really fired up, and Dare can’t let his guard down for a moment–which is a challenge, since right now he’s trying to win the heart of the recently widowed Glynna.

Though his doctoring business is booming due to Glynna’s questionable cooking, Dare seems to encounter unexpected dangers wherever he goes. There’s the avalanche. And the fire. And then the shadowy figure with a knife. Can Dare survive it all long enough to convince Glynna to take another chance on love?

Favorite Quotes:

Dare slowly, gently, slid his hands up to cup her face and lifted his head. He moved back just enough to rest his forehead against hers and take an unsteady breathe.

She reached one shaky hand up to touch his lips. “Your mustache tickles.”

Nodding, Dare said, “I’ll shave it off. I’ll do whatever you want that’ll keep you kissing me.”

Dare laid one finger on Glynna’s lips. The touch became a caress. His eyes glinted with sudden determination. “I know we have to be patient, but I like having you near me, Glynna. I like it too much.”

As he lowered his head to kiss her, he said, “Nothing has ever felt so right.”

“What it’s got to do with anything is, I’ve done more than sew up bullet wounds. I’ve nursed my children through the measles. I’ve tended fevers caused by festering wounds. I’ve even set a broken arm. In fact, the only doctor in these parts who’s better than me is you, Dr. Riker.”

“Then she started crying like her head was a storm cloud. She just poured. I’m surprised Jonas didn’t get hit by a thunderbolt coming straight out of her soggy eyeballs.”

“No I haven’t. A woman gets hurt bad enough, I understand if she cries. Why, I wanted to cry myself when I got shot in the head.” Vince rubbed two fingers over the scar, hidden by his hair, on the left side of his skull. “ I didn’t, of course, but I’d expect a puny little woman to go ahead and weep. But she wasn’t shot, and there was no sign of a broken bone sticking out of her anywhere. She had no cause to carry on like that.”
