Julia Whittaker’s rocky past yielded two daughters, both given up for adoption as
infants. Now she must find them to try to save her son.

Julia and Matt Whittaker’s son has beaten the odds for thirteen years only to have the odds—and his liver—crash precipitously. The only hope for his survival is a “living liver” transplant, but the transplant list is long and Dillon’s time is short. His two older half-sisters, born eighteen months apart to two different fathers, offer his only hope for survival.

But can Julia ask a young woman—someone she surrendered to strangers long ago and has never spoken with—to make such a sacrifice to save a brother she’s never known? Can she muster the courage to journey back into a shame-filled season of her life, face her choices and their consequences, and find any hope of healing?

And what if she discovers in her own daughters’ lives that a history of foolish choices threatens to repeat itself? Julia knows she’s probably embarking on a fool’s errand—searching for the daughters she abandoned only now that she needs something from them. But love compels Julia to take this journey. Can grace and forgiveness compel her daughters to join her?

~My Review~

Julia Whittaker was no stranger heartbreak. After two failed relationships that ended with giving up two daughters for adoption, she didn’t think her heart could break anymore than it had in the past. But now her son Dillon was dying. Dillon was diagnosed with Biliary Artresia Liver disease at birth. Now at the age of thirteen he needed a new liver and he needed it soon. Having ruled out ever possible donor, Julia and her husband Matt knew their only hope were the two daughters she gave up at birth. Julia embarks on a journey to save her son but it ends up being so much more.
Destiny Conners has been living with Luke for awhile and things were going great until Luke let God into his life. When Luke started changing Destiny refused to accept it. She wasn’t only pushing Luke away but God as well. What had a God ever done for her? When Her biological mother showed up on her doorstep asking her to be tested and save her step-brother’s life she knew she would be faced with some hard decisions. Her only request was to meet her real father and her step-sister, Chloe.
Chloe Deschene felt trapped. Her whole life was planned for her by her husband. Jack was methodical. He lived his life by schedules and time tables. They even made love on a schedule. Chloe wanted passion in her marriage and to be able to do what God was calling her to do. She was bored with the way her life was going and when Julia and Destiny appeared out of nowhere, she jumped at the chance to get away from her life.
Three women, who are perfect strangers, embark on a journey together not knowing where it will lead or how it will end. But the bond they form is strong enough to weather any storm. Will they find their miracles or will their hearts be broken?
In my last review I said the book was my best read of the entire year. I can honestly say To Know You is fighting hard for that number one position. I am mostly a romance junkie but in this book romance takes a back seat. “A back seat to what?”, you might ask. My only response is “to everything good”. This story is about family and healing and forgiveness and discovery and, yes, miracles. It’s about strong bonds and sacrifices. It’s about putting someone else’s needs before your own. It’s about seeing God in the midst of your troubles. There is so much about this book that I absolutely loved. The way Julia insisted on supporting Destiny when she needed her even though she knew her son was only a few hours from dying. The way she cared for Chloe during a crisis just the way a mother would. The way Julia’s husband Matt supported her throughout the entire story. And, most of all, the way her son Dillon smiled in the face of death. His part of the story really tore at my heart. I shed many tears during the course of this book but I love that. I love a book that has the ability to make me look into my heart and ask what I would do in that same situation. I guarantee you will love this book but make sure you have plenty of Kleenex handy while reading it. If I could give it more than five stars I would. Very highly recommended!

Q & A: I ask the question and you answer with your own personal thoughts! 🙂

Destiny and Chloe faced a very difficult decision. Be tested and, if compatible, give there step-brother Dillon part of their live. That’s a very life-altering selfless act. If faced with a similar situation what do you think your decision would be and why?

A stranger’s life hangs in the balance. But to save him is to risk everything.

The war is drawing to a close, but the Nazis still occupy part of the Netherlands. After the losses she’s endured, war widow Cornelia is only a shadow of the woman she once was. She fights now to protect her younger brother, Johan, who lives in hiding.
When Johan brings Gerrit Laninga, a wounded Dutch Resistance member, to Cornelia’s doorstep, their ives are forever altered. Although scared of the consequences of harboring a wanted man, Cornelia’s faith won’t let her turn him out.

As she nurses Gerrit back to health, she is drawn to his fierce passion and ideals, and notices a shift within herself. Gerrit’s intensity challenges her, making her want to live fully, despite the fear that constrains her. When the opportunity to join him in the Resistance presents itself, Cornelia must summon every ounce of courage imaginable.

She is as terrified of loving Gerrit as she is of losing him. But as the winter landscape thaws, so too does her heart. Will she get a second chance at true love? She fears their story will end before it even begins.

In the Province of Friesland, Netherlands, war widow, Cornelia de Vries, spent her days simply trying to survive the ravages of the war going on around her. The Germans had taken over her city but with the Allies coming the war would soon be over. When her brother, Johan, brings home and injured man Cornelia is torn. Should she send him on his way knowing he will die or should she risk everything, even the safety of her brother, and let him stay? Once she decides to let Gerrit stay she find she is not only risking their safety but her heart as well. After the death of her husband due to the war Cornelia is afraid she won’t survive another loss so she guards her heart like the Germans guard the city. But a lone Resistance worker soon finds his way into her badly bruised heart. Now if they can only survive so they can build a life together.

Gerrit Laninga knew he was going to die. After surviving his own execution he was sure he was going to bleed to death unless the beautiful woman before him agrees to take him in and tend to his wound. Fighting against her fear, Cornelia de Vries follows her heart and relies on her faith and takes Gerrit into her home. Gerrit is a Resistance worker aiding the people of the city. He never thought about the danger until he lost his heart to Cornelia but he knows he must continue the fight and trust God to keep him safe. The biggest fight of all will be tearing down the wall around Cornelia’s heart. Can he help her get past the fears that are stopping her from living a happy life with him?

I can very easily say that Snow on the Tulips is the BEST book I have read this entire year! It brought out such raw emotions in me that I can’t even begin to describe them. (A few Kleenex? Try a whole BOX!) This book was so descriptive I felt as if I were IN the story fighting along side Cornelia and Gerrit. I’m sure you have heard the phrase “I wish I were a fly on the wall” well I actually felt like I was. It couldn’t have been anymore real had I been in Friesland in 1945. When I was young I saw a movie that touched me so much I fell in love with it then and there and I watch it every chance I get to this day. I still haven’t forgotten the way I felt watching it for the first time. That movie was The Diary of Anne Frank. I love the similarities between the movie and Snow on the Tulips, such as Dr. Boukma hiding five Juden and being discovered by the Germans. In The Diary of Anne Frank Victor Kugler hid several Juden, including Anne’s family, and was later discovered as well. The Germans ravaged the countryside and the reality of just how devastating it was is brought to life on every page. I also loved the trust they had in God. They trusted Him to keep them safe no matter what situation they were in and that is a beautiful thing indeed. This is the first book I have read from Liz Tolsma and I have found a new author to love. If you love books that bring out emotions you thought were hidden or if you’re a fan of The Diary of Anne Frank you will love this book. Just make sure you have the Kleenex handy because you will need them! I most definitely recommend it!

Diana Brennan came west on the orphan train and was given a home with a loving couple who cherished and spoiled her. At 17, she fell hard for Tyson Applegate, the son of a wealthy mine owner. After a whirlwind courtship and marriage, Tyson took off for adventures around the world, including fighting with the Rough Riders in Cuba. Receiving no word of him for seven years, Diana’s infatuation with her dashing husband died an ugly death, and she is ready to move past the old pain and marry again, just as soon as Tyson is declared legally dead.

But when her husband returns, supposedly a changed man, he wants to reunite with his wife and run for the senate. While Diana suspects the election is his real reason for wanting her by his side, she agrees to maintain his home and to campaign with him, but when it is over, win or lose, she wants her freedom. He agrees with one condition—-she must give him a chance to change her mind about him.

My Review:

After her husband was presumed dead while fighting with the Rough Riders in Cuba, Diana Brennan had finally decided to move on with her life. Little did she know on the night her engagement to Brook Calhoun was to be announced, her “deceased” husband would show up. Shortly after her marriage to Tyson Applegate he broke her heart when he up and left to travel the world. Diana loved Tyson with her whole heart but the one thing she couldn’t do was make him love her back. Now after years of grieving his absence and his presumed death, he has watlzed back into her life. What Diana can’t figure out is why but, regardless of the reason, she refuses to let him back into her heart.

Tyson Applegate ran. It is as simple as that. He ran from his tyrant of a father. He ran from his marriage. He ran away from everything he had ever known. But when he learns Diana is having him declared legally dead so she can marry another man he knows he can’t let it happen. During all of his travels and time fighting in Cuba he finally realized something… He loves his wife. Totally and completely. But now he must find a way to get Diana to trust him again. He knows he needs her by his side as he runs for the senate and he uses that fact along with under-handed tactics to get Diana to agree to live with him for six months as a trial basis. If he can’t prove he is a changed man and that his love for Diana is real, she is free to leave and live her life without him. Can Tyson prove his love and heal Diana’s broken heart in time?

Beloved is the third book in the Where the Heart Lives series. Robin Lee Hatcher finishes her series off with finesse. Diana lacks the ability to trust and it’s understandable after what she has been through. In her young life her father deserted his family, her mother died when she was only six, she was seperated from her brother and sister and her husband abandoned her and left her broken. So, yes, she had trust issues. But she was also a woman that loved completely, with her whole heart. I loved it when she finally stopped being meek and found her backbone. She had her doubts about God because of all of the things that had happened to her but in the end she rejoiced in where He had led her. She went from uncertain to positive of her Creator’s undyling love and ever flowing Grace.

Tyson got my ire up with the way he had treated Diana but, as the story progressed, I came to understand just why he did the things he did and I became his champion. I so wanted Diana to hurry and give him a break and I laughed out loud when Tyson discovered Ned, the homeless boy that came to live with them, had a dog. The following paragraph reads: “A wife, Tyson had wanted. A widowed mother-in-law, he’d expected. But a cat, an orphan and now a stray dog as well? What a menagerie! Exactly when had he lost control of his household?” LOL Poor Tyson! But in the end he showed himself to be a man that Diana admired. He would move mountains for her and that makes for a good romance!

I have never been disapointed with one of Miss Robin’s books yet. This was a beautiful story of, not only rekindled love but rekindled faith as well. I was led on a journey from beginning to end and when I reached the final destination I was thoroughly satisfied with the story as a whole. Love, romance, a spiritual awakening and a little suspense thrown in. There is something for everyone among the pages of this book. If you haven’t read it yet, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

#1 bestselling author, Justin Blaney, was born in Los Angeles and began his writing career in Mrs. King’s English class at the age of 6, but after a tragic accident involving a manual pencil sharpener he suddenly declared that writing was “not his thing.”Instead, he moved one state north to make his fortune in the organic meats industry.

After being named the Sausage Baron of Springfield, Justin grew tired of farming fame and moved yet another state north where he can venture into the meat department at Whole Foods without being pestered for the secret to one of his famous recipes.

Since then, Justin founded several companies, earned an MBA, began producing films, went parasailing, rode an elevator to the top of the Space Needle and decided to give writing one last shot, the result of which is a book about a shut-in named Evan Burl who never takes a bath. Evan Burl and the Falling, the first novel in a series that has very little to do with hygiene, reached #1 bestselling status in the suspense, fantasy and teen genres.

Cinderella Goes to the Potty is a very cute story. It tells about Cinderella who is being held captive by an old man and woman. The tree potty had to be fed and they were coming to get Cinderella to use her as a sacrifice. But Cinderella is going to try to escape. Will she manage to get free in time?

While it is a very short story I think kids will love it. It has the essence of a thriller but with kids in mind. I would recommend it to anyone with children. Not overly young though as it does have the thriller aspect. I wasn’t overly fond of the way the printing was at times (wrapped around objects) which made it difficult to read but I would like to point out that the illustrations are amazing. They are a must see!

Hello! I’m partnering with Justin Blaney to help him spread the word about his fun new book series, Isfits.

He’s launching the series with a Kickstarter campaign—he wants to turn these fun/unique stories into full-color, hardback, glossy-paged books.

Who’s Justin? Justin Blaney is a virtuoso. He does a little of everything, but one of the coolest things he does (besides writing amazing stories) is run an organization called Innovate for Jesus (resources for pastors, ministry leaders, non profits, authors, etc.). The site features people like Francis Chan, Rick Warren, Pete Wilson, Matt Chandler, Mary DeMuth, and more.

Besides the super cool graphics, what is special about Isfits? Justin is releasing his Isfits series in the general kids book market rather than as Christian releases. His hope is to spread the gospel message to children who aren’t normally exposed to Christian content.

What Is Isfits?

  • Postmodern fairytales & cautionary confessions
  • A cast of characters sampled from icons of adolescence, re-imagined.
  • A completely new genre of fiction. Since that’s hard to describe, let’s call it a graphic novel like you’ve never seen before.
  • Nearly 200 original designs, optimized for inspirational display in your home, office, prison cell, igloo, or hut.

Click here for more information. If you’d like to sign up to review the first book in the series, Cinderella Goes to the Potty (It’s a five-minute read! You’ll love it!), email info {at} litfusegroup {dot} com (and be entered to win $100 Amazon.com gift card!).  And if you’d like to learn more and support Justin’s Kickstarter, GO HERE.

My Review:

Bree and Kade Matthews wanted children but after her miscarriage she hadn’t been able to get pregnant and it was weighing heavily on both their hearts. Although they had Davey, Bree’s son from a previous marriage, they wanted one together. When Kade mentions adoption Bree agrees to consider it but deep down she knows it won’t be the same. Being a search and rescue worker helps to keep her mind off of her troubles but she never gives up hope of having her own child.

Kade’s sister has been a handful since their parents died and, at twenty one, he feels it’s time for her to grow up and act responsibly. When a parachuter goes down in the woods near Big Piney River, Bree joins in the search. But what appears to be a simple accident turns out to be connected to a missing persons case. Kade is surprised to find out his “irresponsible” sister has been doing her own investigating on the case. Will they solve the case in time? And will Bree and Kade get the baby they have been praying for?
I must say I have fallen In love with the characters of Rock Harbor. Silent Night has a great storyline with depth and just enough suspense to keep you turning the pages at a rapid pace. It’s a short read being a novella but it leaves you wanting more time with the characters of Rock Harbor. And it has not one, but THREE, animals which always enhances the story for me. I loved Bree’s German shepherd / chow mix named Samson who went on search and rescue missions with her. Overall I was very pleased with this Rock Harbor novella and if you like short stories with suspense you will too. It can be read as a stand alone but I think after reading it you will want to delve deeper into the series. Colleen Coble is an author of no disappointments.

My Review:

Leia’s Kahale was so excited that her wedding was only a week away. Preparations were under way and everything was going smoothly–until her sister, Eva, was kidnapped. When the kidnapper threatened to kill Eva if she told anyone, Leia was afraid to even tell Bane, the man she loved.

Bane loved Leia with all of his heart. When he found out Eva had been kidnapped he knew he would do everything in his power to save her. But the fact that Leia didn’t confide in him brought his old feelings of abandonment to the surface. His mother had abandoned him when he was young and he was afraid Leia would leave him too. He knew what he had to do–find Eva and distance himself from Leia. Would this be then end of their life together? Would they find Eva in time? Could Bane get past the felling that Leia had betrayed him?

Holy Night is a short story, or novella, and while I don’t read novellas very often simply because of the length of the book, I found myself completely engrossed in the story. I’m not exactly sure why but I found myself totaling falling I love with Bane’s character and Eva (she has Down syndrome) was absolutely adorable. It was fast paced book and a page turner. Although I was finished with it very quickly I had a feeling of satisfaction when it was over. I loved the fact that Miss Coble dealt with the subject of Down syndrome, too. There is also a short excerpt from the next book in the Aloha Reef series, Distant Shores, in the back. Although I had no problem reading this as a stand alone I am looking forward to the other books in the series. If you love novellas full of suspense and romance you will love Holy Night.

My Review:

Rose Yoder is as Amish as anyone could ever be and she dreamed of an Amish wedding to Jonathan Fisher. That is until Jonathan decided to join the ranks of World War II. All Rose can see is that Jonathan had turned his back on her and everything they stand for. The Amish are not fighters and she feels Jonathan was wrong in his decision. Rose’s world is thrown off balance by what she sees as Jonathan’s betrayal and, on top of a broken heart, she finds out her life isn’t quite what it seems. Rose finally finds out the reason for her constant nightmares… She was adopted by the Yoders but, worse yet, she’s not Amish. Can Jonathan and her family make her see that no matter who her parents were she is as much a part of the Yoder family as if she had been born into it?

Jonathan Fisher has loved Rose for years but he feels he can be more help on the battlefield administering medical aid to the soldiers than sitting in prison for his refusal to join. The one person that he hoped would understand has turned her back on him, he is on the verge of being ostracized by his community and is beginning to think he would be better off in the Englisch world. His love for Rose is what keeps him rooted in their community but Rose is pushing Jonathan away and it has nothing to do with him leaving and everything to do with the secret of her past. Can Jonathan help Rose forget the past and move into the future at his side? Will his Christmas gift help her to come to terms with past?

I have to say I truly adore Amish fiction and a Christmas Gift for Rose did not disappoint me. I could plainly feel the war going on in Rose’s heart and mind. She was Amish but, yet, she wasn’t. It was an emotional tug of war but I loved the fact that she didn’t have to face it alone. Her entire family stood by her and Jonathan’s support was heartwarming. Even though Jonathan was dealing with his own deamons he fought for Rose and gave her the greatest gift she could have ever hoped for. The characters were absolutely loveable and the storyline was definitely different than any I have read before. I thoroughly enjoyed delving into their lives, sharing the hurt and the happiness. Tricia Goyer is a new author to me and one I will be adding to my “Favorite’s” list.

My Review:

Anna Byler had never dated. For some reason none of the young Amish boys had never approached her and she felt inadequate. Jacob Hostetler was new in the community and Anna found herself drawn to him. When she overheard a few of the young men talking about her being unapproachable because of her strict grandfather, Bishop Byler, she was devastated. Was her grandfather really that strict? Hadn’t he always had the best interests of the people in mind? Anna knew she had to do something to prove she was dateable so she asked Jacob out on a date and Anna was ecstatic when he agreed. But Anna hoped it would turn into more. She soon began to realize what others were saying. Her grandfather was all about strict rules and when she found out the magnitude of the secrets her grandmother was keeping from her grandfather she knew a change was needed. But what would it take for him to come to his senses? And would he ever agree to her seeing Jacob?

Jacob Hostetler was new to the community. His family left their old home to get a fresh start after the death of his sister, Leah. His father had withdrawn from his role of taking care of the family and kept to himself because he felt responsible and Jacob prayed this move would heal the wounds of his family and give them a new life as a family. Meeting Anna Byler was the beginning of Jacob’s healing. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and he could share his worries, hopes and dreams with her. He knew he wanted a life with Anna but with Bishop Byler forbidding him to see her he wasn’t sure if they could ever be together. Can they change her grandfather’s mind? And will his family ever be what they once were?

Plain Peace in the sixth book in the Daughters of the Promise series. While I haven’t read all of the books in this series, I have read Plain Proposal and I can say, from my experience, the books only get better and better. The storyline was just great and covered a broad range of issues such as, the death of a child, diabetes and adultery. The plot was fully developed and came to a beautiful, complete ending. I felt satisfied after I finished. There were no loose ends leaving me feeling as if the story wasn’t finished and I love that. I fell in love with the characters and I guarantee you will as well. This book can be read in order as a series but it can also be read as a stand alone novel. But, from what I have read so far, you will surely want to read the others and you “to be read” list will soon be growing. If you like Amish fiction with depth and a storyline that covers powerful issues you’ll love this book.
